Learn the exact water temperatures and steeping times for each tea type to unlock maximum flavor and health benefits.
Water temperature is perhaps the most critical factor in brewing exceptional tea. Each type of tea has evolved over centuries with specific processing methods that determine its ideal brewing temperature.
White teas, with their delicate silver buds, require the gentlest approach—170-185°F (75-85°C) for 3-5 minutes. Green teas thrive at 160-180°F (70-80°C), steeped for just 2-3 minutes to preserve their fresh, grassy notes. Oolong teas, partially oxidized and complex, need 185-205°F (85-96°C) for 3-5 minutes. Black teas and pu-erh demand full boiling water at 200-212°F (95-100°C) for 3-5 minutes to extract their bold, malty character.
The key is patience and precision. Use a thermometer until you can judge temperature by sight and steam. Pre-warm your teapot to maintain consistent heat. And remember—you can always steep longer, but you cannot undo an over-extracted, bitter brew.
